Hi, my name is Citlali, and I want to make Middlebury a better place for ALL students
You may be asking, what is Community Council? Well...
Community Council is a body of staff, faculty, and students that have voice on non-academic issues that impact our community. Members can be from our undergraduate institution or the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) at Monterey. We deliberate these issues and make recommendations to our administration and President Patton to represent the interests and concerns of the whole community. Our diverse membership makes sure each member of the council understands the perspectives of other sections of the community.
Duties of Community Council include:
Who is the other co-chair? It's our lovely Vice President of Student Affairs, Smita Ruzicka
We are now a separate entity from the SGA, so the election for student Co-Chair is open to voting from students, staff, and faculty.

- considering policies and issues in all areas pertaining to the nonacademic life of the College in which students, faculty, and/or staff share mutual concerns
- recommending actions to the president and administration
- overseeing handbook policy and creation of social houses
- receiving questions or matters for deliberation from President Patton and the Senior Leadership Group
- making recommendations for student membership of the Community Judicial Board, the Academic Judicial Board, and the Judicial Appeals Board
- oversight of residential issues
- hearing and taking action on any proposals brought forth by members of the College community concerning nonacademic issues that affect members of the community

I am running for Co-Chair of Community Council because...
ever since I came to Middlebury, I felt a drive to make it a better place for everyone, no matter their identities or systems of power that impact their lives. As a middle-class Chicana who attended a Title I high school, I struggled a lot my first semester. Once I began to join organizations that would allow my voice to be heard to make an impact, I made a vow that I will advocate for historically underrepresented students and do everything in my power to make Middlebury a better place for every single member of our community.
I want to continue making positive change in our community by collaborating with faculty and staff. Community Council has been an underutilized way to make recommendations that are grounded in staff, faculty, and student perspectives. I will not only facilitate these conversations among the Council, but work to make our recommendations and ideas become a reality. While I do have my own agenda of projects I would like to spearhead, I am completely committed to focusing on what the Middlebury community on all our campuses would like to be brought to the forefront. I not only want to bring my own projects to the table, but build upon the past work of student leaders and the Council.
My platform is focused on increasing awareness of the Council, understanding how campus policies are made and how to include underrepresented voices in policy decisions, and working to improve the student, staff, and faculty experiences through collaboration with campus partners. I center diversity, equity, access, and inclusion to uplift underrepresented voices and dismantle systems of institutional oppression. I value acknowledging intersectional identities, communicating with clear language in an accessible format, and having a diverse set of lived experiences in the room and consulted when making decisions.
My personal definition of community is a group of people that uplift each other and give support with equity and kindness. Every day, I am grateful to have the opportunity to pursue a higher education and be a part of the Middlebury community. However, every day, I also see the ways that my definition is not being met to the fullest. I want to be Co-Chair of Community Council to make the necessary changes to see my definition of community be met to leave Middlebury better than how I found it.

"Citlali is one of the most kind, considerate, hard-working, and talented individuals I've ever met. I've noticed her passion for helping others back when I met her freshman year. She has a long track record of making the school a better place, including her work as a JustTalks facilitator where she covered issues like interracial relationships and navigating Middlebury College as a BIPOC student. What makes her a great leader is her effectiveness in conveying her ideas, her expansive knowledge on the problems the school faces, the ease in which she can work with others, and her creativity when problem solving convoluted situations. Most importantly, she works tireless to see that a job is done right. Citlali is perfect for the open Co-chair spot on Community Council. " -Evan Kelly '23
